Gray Matters (NC)
Gray Matters is a fascinating documentary on the great modernist designer and architect Eileen Gray. Her work was often mistakenly attributed to Le Corbusier, but her genius is once again being recognised. Director Marco Antonio Orsini opens his film with the auction of Gray's 1919 Dragons chair for almost €20 million in 2009, proof of her restored reputation and rarity.
Irish-born, aristocratic, bisexual Gray went to Paris and became part of the modernist movement alongside Le Corbusier and her lover, the architect Jean Badovici, for whom she created the iconic white Mediterranean minimalist villa e.1027. The film provides detailed views of this, her ahead-of-the-curve, tubular steel and leather furniture, and is a must for interiors addicts, despite its conventional form and heavy use of talking heads.
