WB Yeats, Lafcadio Hearn & Kyogen

WB Yeats was inspired by Kyogen and Noh, Japanese theatre forms, to produce some of his finest work. Lafcadio Hearn was the Irishman revered by the Japanese people emerging from centuries of isolation. Meet these two giants of Irish and Japanese literature in WB Yeats, Lafcadio Hearn & Kyogen, a performance by the Shigeyama Sengoro family.

Kyogen theatre with laughter at its centre, presents what the common people encounter in their daily lives in a highly stylized form of drama, performed on a simple, minimalist stage. Japan's classical theatrical repertoire of Noh and kyogen, developed together in the 14th century and are collectively referred to as Nohgaku. While Noh plays generally deal with serious or tragic matters, kyogen plays are generally comical or farcical, and sometimes have Japanese folk tales as their base.

The Shigeyama Sengoro Family, Okura School of Kyogen is one of the most prestigious kyogen families in Japan, touring nationally and internationally. In 2016, Masakuni Shigeyama who will play the Blind Beggar in The Cat and the Moon by WB Yeats, succeeded his late grandfather, a designated National Treasure, and his father, by adopting the formal stage name of Sengoro XIV.
