Work in Progress Thebes A Life in ShadowsEma Lemon, Artist's Statement: My piece is inspired by two things; Greek theatre, more specifically the theban plays. I studied drama and theatre studies in UCC where we studied a lot of Greek theatre and one of my friends put on the play Antigone with drama in the second year. He used shadow theatre for the chorus bits and I remember thinking it was the most amazing thing I had ever seen. I wanted to expand that idea by telling a story solely through shadow. The second inspiration is Plato's Allegory of the cave, a short story/dialogue about the theories of perception and things we don't understand being seen as seeing shadows on a cave wall. This play was written 400BC, it has one of the first female protagonists ever written and fantastic dialogue but of course even with all the writing on Greek theatre we still don't know what it was like to witness it as a person in 400BC. My idea is to bring the wonder and magic into a play that is over 2000 years old and maybe bring a little appreciation of Greek theatre to Waterford, they gave us the start of theatre after all.
