About An Sean Bhean Óg

A scientist has found a rare specimen.

An rud is annamh is iontach.

But how can they communicate when they do not speak the same language?

Conas cumarsáid a chruthú gan na focail chearta?

An Sean Bhean Óg, is a bilingual theatre performance for young audiences.

Commissioned by Cork County Council, this new play in Irish, English…and a little Portuguese, written by artist Grace Keily in collaboration with Nathalia Marques, is approx 25 minutes and ideal for all children aged 8+.

Writer Grace Kiely, states, ‘For me personally, seeing the children take such pride in letting me know that they understood some of the Irish, was a joy; A little seed sown. An unexpected thrill was to see the same sense of belonging and pride in the Brazilian children who heard a little of their own language in the show too and were acknowledged and given a sense of status in that small simple act.’  One Portuguese child stated ‘É português! Eu também sei falar Português.’ Translation: ‘It is Portuguese! I can also speak Portuguese!’

Síle Ní Bhroin, Associate Director/Stiúrthóir Comhlach states, ‘Is gearr-dráma spraoiúil atá ann, ag iniúchadh cumarsáide, teangacha, agus an meon atá againn do dhaoine atá difriúil uainn féin.’
