Cinema Paradiso – screened as part of our Bealtaine Festival celebrations

Director Giuseppe Tornatore’s enchanting Cinema Paradiso is a spellbinding love letter to the magic of film that has captivated audiences since its release. Set in post-war Sicily, this beautiful coming-of-age tale follows young Salvatore, a mischievous boy who develops a profound friendship with Alfredo, the projectionist at the local cinema. This heartwarming Italian classic celebrates the magic of cinema and the bonds it creates.

Through Salvatore’s eyes, we follow his lifelong love affair with film and we experience the transformative power of storytelling and the communal joy of cinema in a small Italian village. Cinema Paradiso is a moving tribute to childhood, friendship and the timeless allure of the silver screen. Tornatore crafts a poignant narrative about passion, mentorship and the bittersweet nature of memory that resonates across cultural boundaries.

The film is elevated to sublime heights by Ennio Morricone’s evocative musical score, co-composed with his son Andrea. Their sweeping, emotional compositions perfectly complement the tender moments and nostalgic atmosphere that make Cinema Paradiso an enduring masterpiece of European cinema.

This BAFTA and Oscar-winning film remains one of the most beloved examples of Italian filmmaking, a timeless celebration of how the flickering images in a darkened theatre can shape our lives, our dreams and our hearts.

The Penn Moviegoer

“Cinema Paradiso is a lovely movie that tells the story of two friends and their love of movies. It contains one of Ennio Morricone’s most famous scores.”
The Film Realm

“A real experience, even if you might find yourself having heretical thoughts about it.”
Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

Recent changes to cinema which have seen the projectionist’s art sidelined in the digital age add a further layer of poignancy to the magical memories.
Mark Kermode, The Guardian

“A funny, warmly sentimental celebration of movie-going using the cinema as a metaphor for an era, a lost innocence and an irrecoverable past.”
Philip French, The Guardian
