The Adult Youth Orchestra of Ireland is the brainchild of founder and trailblazer, Barbara Dowling. A gap nationally for a symphony orchestra, something akin to the highly successful Irish Symphonic Wind Orchestra, was identified. While there is wonderful orchestral work happening regionally, we believe this is the first all island, post- youth orchestra project of its kind to date. The aim being to bring together those past members of all youth orchestras from around the island of Ireland to explore the symphonic repertoire with musicians spanning the generations.
This innovative orchestra was born in 2022 after a highly successful Christmas in June for Brain Tumour Ireland fundraiser. A huge symphony orchestra was amassed after a call to arms was issued by Barbara Dowling. After the enormous success of that project the obvious course of action was to continue and build upon the goodwill, hence was born the Adult Youth Orchestra of Ireland.
In 2023 AYOI held its first stand alone workshop and concert. This was held in University Limerick where, under the baton of Mr Ronan O’Reilly, the orchestra performed an impressive symphonic programme of Tchaikovsky Romeo and Juliet Overture, Mendelssohn Hebrides Overture, Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No.2 with soloist Darragh Brogan and Dvorak New World Symphony to great acclaim.
In 2024 AYOI revisited its roots by holding the second Christmas in June for Brain Tumour Ireland in Waterford’s SETU Arena; another hugely successful performance and fundraiser. Over those two endeavours AYOI are proud to say they have raised €40,000 for BTI.
The orchestra is going on its first European trip next summer to Prague. There are lots of exciting things on the horizon for the Adult Youth Orchestra of Ireland.
