Pop-Up Exhibition by Sculptor James Horan following 3-month long Artist Residency at Garter Lane Studios.
The exhibition runs until January 29th and James himself will be on site on Wed 21 and Thurs 22 from 10am-1pm. James studied sculpture in Crawford College of Art & Design, Cork and has been exhibiting in Ireland and internationally since 2003. His expressive figures in marble and limestone are recognizable by their oversized hands and feet. A notable trait in James’ sculpture is the use of marble (and other stone) in a very loose, sketch-like manner.
“I think of my work as a physical representation of an emotional response. It is not enough, for me, to create pretty things. I want my sculptures to affect people, to tap into something intangible while also being a powerful physical presence”.
For the purposes of this exhibition, James is exploring “… the self doubt and self critical nature of being an artist. The delight in inspiration, the disappointment if an idea doesn’t work, the pride of showing alongside peers, and the constant doubt and “imposter syndrome” that many artists feel.” He has gone back to the basics of drawing that he initially learned in art college concentrating on self portraits and being absorbed once more in that process.
This Artist Residency was generously funded by Waterford City & County Council.
All exhibitions at Garter Lane are kindly funded by the Arts Council of Ireland, Waterford City & County Council, and the Department of Social Protection.
A reminder that the building does not have a lift and the exhibition is accessed by stairs.
