Mulholland Drive (2001)
As a special bonus to get you warmed up for the upcoming new season of movies from Waterford Film For All, we’re screening director David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive in tribute to one of cinema’s greatest auteurs.
Lynch’s genius shines through this mesmerising Hollywood dreamscape, where his signature surrealism creates pure cinematic magic. This stunning film showcases Lynch’s extraordinary ability to transform reality into art, reminding us why his visionary storytelling continues to captivate and inspire audiences worldwide.
The film exemplifies his career-long obsession with fracturing identity and reality, creating a cinematic experience that celebrates why Lynch remains one of cinema’s most uncompromising visionaries.
Mulholland Drive is a hypnotic neo-noir mystery that blurs the line between dreams and reality. The labyrinthine masterpiece follows a hopeful actress, Betty Elms, who arrives in Hollywood to become a movie star when she encounters the enigmatic brunette Rita, a mysterious woman suffering from amnesia after a car crash on Mulholland Drive.
As they search for clues about Rita’s identity, they descend into a surreal and haunting world of secrets, illusion and fractured identities. Meanwhile, filmmaker Adam Kesher runs into ominous trouble while casting his latest project.
With its unforgettable imagery, haunting score and non-linear narrative, Mulholland Drive is a cinematic puzzle that continues to captivate and challenge audiences.
True to Lynch’s fascination with the darkness lurking beneath polished surfaces, the film transforms Hollywood into a psychological maze where ambition, desire and delusion converge in ways that challenge conventional narrative structure and invite viewers into a deeply unsettling meditation on the nature of identity and the price of dreams deferred.
David Lynch’s seductive and scary vision of Los Angeles’ dream factory is one of the true masterpieces of the new millennium, a tale of love, jealousy and revenge like no other.

Anyway, I dropped an exposed film cartridge into the seawater (not On Purpose) while I was shooting and some of the emulsion got messed up and now the reel smells funny.
