People of Steel is a documentary film highlighting the defenders of Mariupol.

The film aims to draw international attention to the war in Ukraine and the urgent need for the release of Ukrainian prisoners of war, directed and produced by musician Serhii Fomenko.

This documentary film gives an inside look to the front lines of the current war in Ukraine through the eyes of the soldiers on the ground fighting for freedom as well as personal stories from their relatives who hope for the release of prisoners from Russian captivity.

About 2,000 Ukrainian prisoners remain in captivity of the terrorist Russian federation and are subjects of psychological violence, torture, rape and murder. In the city of Mariupol, which has been surrounded by Russian troops since march 2, 2022, women and small children were hiding from aerial bombardment, artillery fire and prohibited phosphorus and chemical bombs for months.

The defenders of Mariupol shared their supply of food, water and medicine with the civilians until they were able to evacuate them. The heroic Ukrainian soldiers of the Mariupol garrison stayed behind and held positions on the territory of ‘Azovstal’ until the last shot, without water, food or medicine.
They came to be called “people of steel”.

“The main goal of the film is to ensure that those in captivity are eventually released and do not remain without media coverage”
– Serhii Fomenko
