In 2013, a woman sent an offensive tweet as she boarded a plane to South Africa. By the time the plane landed 11 hours later, she had lost her job and become a social pariah. In 2013, two men at a tech conference made a sexual joke. A woman in front of them tweeted about it and they were fired from their jobs and would never find a job in the tech industry again. These and many other similar incidents have become known as “trial by social media”.
