For its 90th birthday in 2025, Waterford Dramatic Society will present John B. Keane’s classic play Big Maggie.
W.D.S. last produced this play in 1993 with Frieda Ryan in the title role. Frieda will now move to the director’s chair for this production.
We have assembled a great cast and production team for this landmark production. Denise Quinn will play the central character Maggie Polpin. We are delighted to be back in Garter Lane Studios and Theatre to continue our great relationship with the management and staff, whom we thank sincerely.
Rehearsals started in mid-January and continue apace.

Big Maggie, a role created for Anna Manahan back in the 1960’s and set in that decade, is one of the greatest roles for a woman in the entire Irish canon and Maggie towers (metaphorically) over her children and anyone who tries to thwart her. And she has a big plan which will shock her four children who have expectations which they have been given or at least been given to believe by their recently deceased father Walter Polpin. The first hints of a major shake up in the Polpin family are revealed at the end of Walter’s funeral in the opening scene. And that’s just for starters. This is a not to be missed production from multi-award winning WDS. Join us for our big birthday celebration.
