Famously described by critics as a clash of ‘fire and water’, Turner and Constable’s respective styles were both bold yet starkly different – a true clash of the titans. Both Turner’s incandescent sunsets and awe-inspiring visions and Constable’s idealised portrayals of cherished English landscapes sent contemporary audiences into a frenzy of excitement, and both still leave viewers awestruck today. Constable epitomised the finest traditions of realism and pastoral nostalgia while Turner forged a bold new language of emotion and dreamlike atmosphere.
