Cork School of Music Symphony Orchestra

The Cork School of Music [CSM] Symphony Orchestra was founded by Adrian Petcu, former Head of String Studies at CSM and has developed from relatively modest beginnings as a Chamber Orchestra to become hailed in the national press as ‘the finest orchestra of its kind in Ireland’. The continuous tradition of high-standard playing is indebted both to its founder and to the leadership of Dr. Geoffrey Spratt who conducted the group for nearly twenty years. The orchestra continues to go from strength-to-strength under the guidance of its current conductor, Conor Palliser who has been conducting the orchestra since 2009.

Its regular performances in Cork are complemented by visits to venues throughout Ireland and abroad. The orchestra has twice taken part in the International Festival of Youth Orchestras held annually in Valencia, Spain, and successfully pioneered the concept of “Proms” concerts in Cork. It has commissioned works from a number of Irish composers – most notably John Kinsella, whose Symphony No. 7 it premièred in 1999.  Every year the orchestra accompanies the winner of the CSM’s Senior Concerto Competition, and it regularly collaborates with the School’s adult, mixed-voice Fleischmann Choir for performances of the oratorio repertory including Orff’s Carmina Burana for which the orchestra was awarded the Irish Association of Youth Orchestras / Penney’s Artistic Achievement Award for 2003.

As well as performing the nineteenth-and twentieth-century masterpieces from the core orchestral repertory, the orchestra prides itself on bringing rarely-heard works to Irish audiences – most recently including Finzi’s Intimations of Immortality, Liszt’s Dante Symphony, Rudi Stephen’s Musik für Orchester, and Bruch’s Prelude to Odysseus.

Many of the orchestra’s past members now hold positions in some of the leading orchestras across the globe. The orchestra owes a great deal of gratitude to the high-class training that is issued in all areas at the MTU Cork School of Music.

Conor Palliser has established himself as one of Ireland’s leading young conductors and is also a highly-regarded french horn player, pianist, répétiteur and educator. He is the conductor of the Irish Symphonic Wind Orchestra, the Cork School of Music [CSM] Symphony Orchestra, chorus master to the Cork Operatic Society and a regular tutor with the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland. Conor was also the conductor of the 140-member Fleischmann Choir from 2013-2022. He is on the staff of MTU CSM as conductor, lecturer, piano tutor and coach accompanist.

Conor has been guest conductor to the National Symphony Orchestra (including a national tour in 2015), the RTÉ Concert Orchestra (including a performance in the presence of President Michael D. Higgins as part of the Easter 1916 anniversary festivities) and the Ulster Orchestra. Following his Carnegie Hall debut with the New York Concerti Sinfonietta in 2017, the Epoch Times wrote that Conor is an “outstanding Irish conductor.” In July 2022, he conducted the premiere performances of John O’Brien and Eadaoin O’Donoghue’s Opera Morrígan at the Cork Opera House which received 5-star reviews from both the Irish Examiner and Irish Times. Opera Magazine [UK] wrote “Conor Palliser was the conductor [of Morrígan], eliciting exciting singing and playing from all and building some remarkable climaxes as the story progressed”.

As a horn player, Conor has worked with the National Symphony Orchestra, the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, the Irish Chamber Orchestra, Camerata Ireland and Wexford Opera as well as being a former member of the European Union Youth Orchestra and the International Youth Wind Orchestra. He has also worked alongside both the Callino and the RTÉ Contempo Quartets.

As a pianist, he is hugely in demand to accompany musicians in competitions and festivals across Ireland. He was a finalist of the Irish Freemasons’ Young Musician of the Year, a concerto soloist on the National Concert Hall stage and his debut piano recital in 2008 was broadcast by RTÉ’s lyric fm.

Conor has been heralded as an advocate for bringing previously unheard works to Irish audiences and regularly performs music by Irish composers, past and present, including Linda Buckley, Aloys Fleischmann, John Gibson, John Kinsella, John O’Brien, Simon O’Connor, Seán Ó’Riada, Sam Perkin, and Bill Whelan.
