Ross Ward, an active member of Waterford Youthreach, has been selected to represent Ireland in an international boxing competition being held in Palestine. Ward, a member of the St Saviours Boxing Club (Ballybeg, Waterford) will be one of the first people to have ever been invited to partake in a boxing tournament being organised by the Palestinian Boxing Federation via The Shamrock and Olive Tree Project. ‘Seconds Out…’ is short film documenting Ward’s historic journey and preparations. The film has been made by Youthreach students alongside Waterford film maker Gary Kenneally and is a collaborative community project between Youthreach, Waterford Gallery of Art, and Garter Lane Arts Centre (supported by Creative Ireland).
Seconds Out… highlights the strength of community and resource sharing. The Shamrock & Olive Tree Project is a collaboration between St Pauls Antrim A.B.C, Esker Boxing Club, and Saviours Crystal Boxing Club. These partnering organisations will send twenty boxers, coaches, and judges to help upskill and train
alongside the Palestine Boxing Federation.
This short film project looks to capture Ross in a ‘day-in-the-life’ style documentary from morning routines at home, training, conversations with friends and family, and reflections on the important part that boxing has played in his life and to his community
“It puts everything on the map for Ireland. We’re literally the first country to be invited to fight in Palestine. Waterford, one of the first places to box over in Palestine. I’m also the first Traveller to box over in Palestine. It’s history.” (Ross Ward)
